BMW reveals two new models for its green i sub-brand
BMW has revealed details of its i sub-brand in advance of its expected public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The German manufacturer's i models will be made up of a range of high-tech, purpose-built electric, hybrid and range extender-powered BMW models.
The first two of many BMW i models revealed in prototype form are the compact four-seater i3 and the sportier two-plus-two i8.
The i8 is definitely the more interestingly-styled of the two, bearing more than a passing resemblance to the EfficientDynamics concept car seen at Frankfurt in 2009.
The i3 four-seater, is an all-electric hatchback that will be offered with an optional range-extending engine like the Vauxhall Ampera.
On the other hand, the i8 comes with petrol-electric hybrid drive.
Production versions of the i3 and i8 are expected in 2013 and will be built on a dedicated line at BMW's Leipzig manufacturing base in Germany.
