An airline worker has been accidentally shot by a passenger at the ticket counter as the man tried to check in a hunting rifle for a flight.

Edward Deubler, 65, from New Orleans, was trying to check in his rifle with a United Airlines employee at the ticket desk when his gun discharged.

The bullet fragmented as it hit a counter at the Louisiana airport before the shrapnel bounced off and hit the worker in the leg, said police.

The staff member was taken to hospital but his injuries were not life-threatening.

The incident happened on Monday morning at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana.

According to the Daily Mail, Deubler has been issued with a misdemeanour summons for negligent injury.

A Transportation Security Administration (TSA) spokesman told The Times-Picayune that guns are allowed in checked baggage.

But they must be declared during the ticket counter check-in process, unloaded and in a hard-sided locked container.

a TSA spokesman said: 'We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident.'
