Dramatic images show an Indian village terrorised by a leopard, as six people are mauled.

The wild cat was spotted when it strayed into the densely populated area of Prakash Nagar village, near the Salugara on the outskirts of Siliguri. Villagers raised the alarm and chased the leopard, which injured people as it fled, eventually taking shelter in an abandoned house.

Kanchan Banerjee, forest ranger of the Sukna Wildlife Range, told The Hindu newspaper: "The animal pounced upon a forest guard when he tried to tranquilise it at the house, injuring him critically. The leopard fled from the site and took shelter in the bushes at the end of the village."

As wildlife officers arrived, the leopard remerged, attacking three people in front of hundreds of horrified onlookers. Terrified villagers climbed on to their rooftops amid the leopard's rampage.

Banerjee told The Hindu newspaper: "Three policemen were severely injured in the incident that led to a scuffle between the animal and the policemen. The forest guards, meanwhile, succeeded in tranquilising the leopard."

Having suffered its own injuries in the confrontation, the leopard was taken to a veterinary centre but later died.
