Talking cars could reduce pile-ups by 40 percent

Scientists at the University of Bologna reckon they've developed computer software that will let cars communicate with one another on the road, and therefore reduce accident rates.

In fact, the technology should bring motorway pile-ups down by as much as 40 percent if the Italian researchers have got their sums right. It would differ from current systems by knowing exactly what has happened up ahead on the road.
