Is it really grim 'down south'?

Both double-income families earn £50,000. One lives in Surrey and used to enjoy three holidays a year and monthly gym membership. Their mortgage sucks away 40% of their income. The other family live in the North, have no trouble paying their 10%-of-income mortgage. The quality of life divide is huge.
