British GP seals Caterham and Lotus alliance
It was only a matter of time before Tony Fernandes hitched the fortunes of his newly acquired Caterham sports car brand to those of his Formula One team. As befits the home race for Team Lotus at Silverstone, Caterham logos are now emblazoned on the cars to be driven by Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli.
50 years after the first Team Lotus victory in Formula One with Innes Ireland at the wheel in the USA, Fernandes has effected an F1 comeback for the second of Colin Chapman's legendary marques. Since purchasing Caterham, the Malaysian businessman has also renamed his GP2 outfit 'Caterham Team AirAsia'.
Caterham Cars managing director, Ansar Ali, said: "This is a monumental occasion for Caterham Cars. We are a niche low-volume sportscar manufacturer and yet we are now a key partner for a Formula One team with an extremely bright future.
"In terms of global visibility for the Caterham brand, you don't get much better than Formula One. Caterham has a long and distinguished history in grassroots motorsport but this puts the firm in front of a truly global audience to sit alongside major car brands including Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes Benz."
