Rights body to help passengers get unclaimed compensation

Updated

A consumer rights body is launching a website to help passengers win millions of pounds worth of unclaimed compensation from airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet.

An estimated £130 million a year is believed to be left unclaimed, with passengers either unaware of their rights, unable to get advice, or unable to get the airlines to agree to compensating them.

In response to Ryanair'rs recent announcement that it will only deal with passenger claims directly, EUclaim plans to launch 'do it yourself' products to empower passengers to get the money they are entitled to.

Based on an average UK flight cancellation rate of 1.2 per cent, the company estimates that 1,000 UK passengers a day are entitled to up to £476 each – amounting to £130 million in unclaimed compensation a year.

The site will be designed to maximise assistance to air passengers in pursuing compensation rights under EC Regulation 261/2004. This regulation is supposed to give consumers rights to compensation and assistance in the event of denied boarding, cancellations, long delays and involuntary downgrading.
