Ken Block set for a taste test of Formula 1
If you asked us which racing driver we'd currently like to be, it probably wouldn't be Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel or any of the F1 grid, it would be the American rally star and YouTube hero, Ken Block.
We wouldn't have all the talent in the world or as much of the limelight, but we get the distinct impression we'd be having a lot more fun in the Gymkhana king's shoes.
That decision got even easier over the weekend when we learnt that the baseball cap-wearing Block will be given the chance to drive a Formula One car at Monza over the summer.
Most racing talent will never get a sniff of an F1 car, but the unassuming and ingratiatingly humble Yank will slide into the Toyota test car belonging to Pirelli thanks to a sponsorship deal with the tyre manufacturer.
"I never imagined that something like this would even be available," Block told Autosport magazine in Montreal.
"But Pirelli saw the idea of doing something unique and different with me. They have been a great partner with me for everything I have been doing, so it is just something that for me is a dream come true.
"I have so little experience in open wheel asphalt, so it will be a huge learning experience for me."
Despite competing in the World Rally Championship for Ford, the prospect of driving a F1 car will mean some physical fine tuning for Block, who admitted he will begin some serious neck exercises before his opportunity comes in August.
Never missing a chance to turn an invite into ruthless self-promotion, Block also said he was going to see what he could 'talk them into' when asked if another Gymkhana video would result from the one-day experience.
"On top of that, we are talking about a couple of creative ideas of ways for me to learn the track - maybe bringing the WRC car over, as it is two weeks before WRC Germany, which is an asphalt event. It is going to be a lot of fun," he added.
See what we mean?
