Aston Martin Rapide to be made in the UK

Aston Martin will provide a boost to the Midlands with the news that it will move production of its four-door Rapide to the UK in 2012.

Since it was launched in 2008 the Rapide has been built in Magna Steyr in Austria, but the production line will shift to the firm's plant in Gaydon by the middle half of next year.
Aston Martin boss Dr Ulrich Bez said that there were restrictions on Gaydon's abilities when the car was launched, but this has now been resolved, allowing the production line to move.

"In 2008 we had facility restrictions at Gaydon which indicated that production of Rapide at Gaydon would likely compromise production of our other cars," he said. "We were not prepared to do this."

"Now, three years on things are very different – Gaydon is more established, more flexible and more efficient. While our overall volume has not changed significantly, we now produce a far richer model mix – eight model lines (plus five variants) compared to three model lines (plus two variants) in 2008 – so Rapide production is now possible."

Aston Martin sold 199 Rapides in 2010, and 99 so far this year.
