Solar-powered bikini lets you charge your iPod on the beach

Updated

If you love to listen to music while you're lazing on the beach, but can't get your iPod to last for a whole shift of sunbathing, then the iKini could be just what you need.

This hi-tech bikini is made up of solar panels that can charge anything from an MP3 player to a camera, and has USB sockets stitched in so that you can plug your devices straight in.

The designer, New York-based Andrew Schneider, spends up to 80 hours making each bikini with thin, flexible photo-voltaic panels and conductive thread.

But is it safe to swim in an electrified bikini?

Yes, says Mr Schneider, provided that you towel off first. And there's no risk of electric shock either.

He says: 'You wouldn't even feel the charge.'

Each bikini is made to measure and costs more than £120, and he's now working on a pair of men's swimming trunks that can cool beer.
