Road and rail chaos for millions this Bank Holiday

Staycationers are facing road and rail travel misery this Bank Holiday weekend.

Repairs on railways are set to delay journeys, while drivers face the prospect of battling through miles of roadworks.

RAC's Kevin Andrews said the combination of the spring Bank Holiday and half term next week will lead to heavy traffic on most routes, with around 15 million cars expected to hit the roads.

'Drivers are recommended to get away early and allow plenty of time to avoid jams,' he said.
But they'll be contending with 122 miles of roadworks across 25 sites around the country.

This is despite the Highways Agency suspending 33 miles of works from 6am tomorrow until midnight Monday.

What's more, the BBQ heatwave that was predicted doesn't look like it will materialise.

Met Office forecaster John Hammond said temperatures would stay in the mid to low 60s in the North with the South enjoying highs of around 70F (21C).
