One simple move saves hundreds on flights

Cash-strapped families going on their summer holiday could save hundreds of pounds by flying on a weekday evening rather than a Saturday morning.

Sunshine breaks always get more pricey during the school holidays, but there are some things you can do to save money.

Researchers at consumer group Which? found that a family of four flying to Majorca on a Saturday morning in July will pay £2,334 for a one-week break with Thomson. The same holiday departing on a Thursday evening in August, however, costs £1,480 - a massive saving of £854.

A holiday with Cosmos to Majorca came in at £2,536 based on a Saturday departure from Manchester Airport. That was £655 more than the same holiday leaving on a Friday afternoon. Which? says families could save an average of £339 by flying out on a weekday, rather than a weekend during the holidays.

Seven of the eight most expensive departure days were Saturdays. The researchers also found differences of more than £100 between different midweek departure days, so it's worth checking out different dates. The consumer group said holidays with flights going out in the evening - 6pm to midnight - were generally cheaper.

The editor of Which? Travel, Lorna Cowan, said: "It is encouraging to see that you can make significant savings on a family holiday - as long as you are willing to be flexible about departure dates and are prepared to spend some time doing your research.

"It's also a good idea to look out for the free child places offered by some tour operators as these can really help to reduce the cost of your holiday, especially at peak times."
