Even though Britain was hit by the coldest winter in 100 years, 20 per cent regularly turned off their heating in order to save money on bills last year and that number looks certain to rise.

Last week the Bank of England predicted that gas prices could rise by 15 per cent later this year and the average electricity bill may increase by 10 per cent.

Centrica, the company which owns British Gas, has also warned of soaring fuel bills and wholesale costs continue to rise. Price comparison site uSwitch said the average household could end up trying to find an extra £148 to cover this year's fuel bills.

With the forecast looking bleak, it is reckoned that a quarter of Brits will be shivering at home this winter.

uSwitch spokeswoman Ann Robinson told the Daily Express: "This time it's going to be a minimum of 25 per cent who will have to switch their heating off.

"Many people are going to struggle to pay. We have to pray for a mild winter."
