Experts at Autoglym, the car wash gurus, have undone decades of dad advice by revealing that the acid content in bird droppings are not to blame for blemished paintwork.

According to research conducted by the specialist, the damage actually occurs when the paint lacquer expands and contracts around the hardened birds' mess, leaving a telltale etching even when the deposit is removed.
