MG Motor plans hybrid MG6

MG Motor, the British sports car brand owned by the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, plans to introduce a hybrid version of its newly launched MG6 hatchback.

The hybrid version will appear at the end of 2012, is likely to go on sale in the UK in early 2013 and should improve the fuel consumption of the equivalent petrol-engined MG6 by around 20 percent.
SAIC is also considering whether to sell an MG version of the small electric city car that it is developing for the China-only Roewe brand, which has a range of around 90 miles. The availability of government subsidies and the size of the recharging network will determine whether the car goes on sale here, say SAIC insiders.

Also possible is a plug-in hybrid version of the smaller MG5 hatch revealed in concept form at the Shanghai motor show. That car will appear in plug-in form at the end of 2013 following a 2012 launch, and could go on sale here with this hybrid option in 2014.

A plug-in hybrid offers the potential for savings of up to 60 percent over the equivalent petrol model.
