Video of the day: Chinese pandas keep cool in ice playpen

Ruth Doherty

Pandas are known to love the cold, so staff at a Chinese zoo have come up with a novel - and cute - way of keeping them happy in the summer - a specially constructed deluxe ice playpen.

The bears look happy as Larry as they roll around in their freezing funhouse, which uses special artificial ice and snow-making machines to maintain cool temperatures.

A worker at the Xiangjiang Safari Park in China's southern Guangzhou city said the new ice park would keep the pandas' playfights in hand.

"It is hot in Guangzhou and the pandas living here would get whiny because of the temperature. The low temperatures will make the pandas feel more comfortable and behave more gently," he explained.
