Photos of the day: See the midnight sun in Svalbard

Norway is entering its summer midnight sun season, and we think these pictures show what an amazing phenomenon it is.

The midnight sun occurs at latitudes near the Arctic Circle, and south near the Antarctic Circle. These images were taken on the island of Spitsbergenon the Svalbard archipelago.

The photo above shows people on ski-doos are admiring a halo caused by the midnight sun, an optical phenomenon produced by ice crystals in the clouds.

The photo below shows reindeer grazing as the sun sits low in the sky.
