Traffic misery beckons as southbound M1 remains shut
The M1 may not fully reopen to traffic until the end of this week – meaning potential traffic chaos for everyone hoping to get an early start to their Easter break.
Engineers are struggling to support a bridge damaged by the intense heat of the fire that closed the motorway on Friday.
Two northbound lanes were reopened over the weekend, but the southbound route remains closed while steel supports are placed under the stricken structure.
The engineers working for the Highways Agency told the BBC that it was a 'miracle' the concrete bridge hadn't collapsed following the scrapheap fire in Mill Hill.
The team hoped to have one southbound lane opened by Monday morning, but their plans have been delayed due to the difficulties of moving heavy equipment into the confined space beneath the bridge.
