Rejoice: Ford set to build 180bhp Fiesta ST

Fast Ford fans will be delighted to hear that blue oval has finally decided to offer a full-blooded hot hatch version of its best-selling supermini.

Next year should see the introduction of the new Fiesta ST, powered by a 180bhp version of Ford's 1.6-litre Ecoboost petrol engine.

The car's launch is likely to coincide with the Fiesta's mid-life facelift, and will offer a neat tie-in with the manufacturer's current
WRC campaign.

According to Autocar magazine, the project has been hanging in the balance for some years before finally getting the go-ahead.

The ST will be a direct competitor for cars like the Renaultsport Clio 200 and the Volkswagen Polo GTI, although there is no confirmation on where Ford will position its pricing (somewhere between the two, we'd guess).

The hot Fiesta will almost certainly be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox - expect the usual ST suspension tweaks and styling mods to also feature.
