Porsche unveils 542bhp Panamera Turbo S

Porsche has unveiled its most powerful Panamera yet under the Turbo S badge.

The new range-topper boosts output of the 4.8-litre twin-turbo V8 to 542bhp - a 42bhp increase over the standard Turbo model's 500bhp.
This translates into a launch-control assisted 0-62mph time of 3.8 seconds, which is 0.2 seconds quicker than the 911 GT3 RS manages.

Impressive stuff from a lardy four-door saloon, even more so when you consider Porsche has delivered the performance gains without any loss of economy. The Turbo S returns the same 24.6mpg as the conventional Turbo.

So how have they managed it? Well, according to the manufacturer it's all down to improved turbochargers (which get uprated titanium-alloy turbines for lower weight and better response) and a remapped engine management system.

The latter helps the Turbo S to produce 590lb ft of torque thanks to an over-boost function. Expect the in-gear kick to be...aggressive.

The car's performance gains are complemented by a sprinkling of handling options as standard. The Turbo S gets Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and the Sport Chrono Package Turbo to go with its 20-inch Turbo II alloy wheels with increased rear axle track width.

The Panamera Turbo S goes on sale in June and is priced from £122,623.
