Heathrow limps in at 99th in world's best airports list

Updated

Heathrow airport has been ranked worse than almost 100 other airports around the world.

In the confidential international listing, Britain's flight epicentre is rated inferior to Calcutta, Moscow and Johannesburg, coming in 99th in the table of the world's 146 main airports.

The problems? Passenger have complained of long security queues and poor 'ambience'.

The 'snow-gate' at Christmas was also a factor. According to the Telegraph, the numbers suggest the airport is struggling to cope with its packed schedules, something airline executives have repeatedly complained about, particularly when bad weather or other unexpected events strike.

The airport runs at 98 per cent capacity and handles 66 million passengers a year. So there is only a 2% leeway to cope with natural crises lik the heavy snowfall and prolonged cold before Christmas.

The Times newspaper also found out that, despite decades of innovation in air travel, it now takes about 23 minutes longer to fly from Heathrow to Paris than it did in 1979.
