Benidorm TV show gives resort's tourism a big boost

Updated

The ITV sitcom Benidorm has led to a surge in tourism to the Costa Blanca resort.

The comedy - which stars Johnny Vegas - is full of hilarious sunburn and squabbling, which seems to have triggered a renewed interest in the area as a top budget holiday destination.

According to the comparison website travelsupermarket.com (yes, they of that Jedward ad), searches for Benidorm package deals more than double when the show is on TV.

Interest shoots up by 159 per cent when the programme is aired at 9pm on Friday nights, compared to searches at the same time on other nights of the week.

The show, which was first broadcast in 2007, won the award for most Most Popular Comedy Programme at the National TV Awards in January.

It's currently in its fourth series and follows the Garvey family and others during an action-packed stay in the resort, and their ups and downs surely strike a chord with thousands of Brit holidaymakers across the country who've endured similar experiences.

'People love to be inspired by films, TV and celebrities for their holidays and it's great to see such a surge in interest to Benidorm,' said travelsupermarket.com's Bob Atkinson.

He added: 'Benidorm is enjoying a bit of a renaissance and represents great value at the moment; it's the perfect recession destination where you can have a good time without spending a fortune.'
