Goodwood debut for tuned Mugen CR-Z

Mugen, the Honda tuner, is developing a tuned version of the CR-Z hybrid which will deliver Type R-rivalling performance.

The company's European division is planning to unveil the prototype at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
The CR-Z Mugen will feature a modified version of the petrol-electric drivetrain used in the conventional car, and adds bespoke brakes and suspension to improve handling.

Despite increasing power output, the firm believes that by retuning the 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine and Honda IMA system it may also succeed in extracting better economy and emissions figures from the CR-Z.

That cause will be helped by a planned reduction in unsprung mass - attributed to the use of lightweight components - which Mugen is also pursuing.

Expect the new CR-Z to look the part, too. The tuner will add a unique body kit to distinguish the model from standard.

Mugen's hybrid is currently classed as a one-off and is not intended for production, but that could change if the hot CR-Z attracts enough attention in the summer.
