Geneva motor show: Subaru Boxer sports car

Subaru has finally given us the chance to see the first version of the sports car that is the product of its collaboration with Toyota.

It is only a concept for the time being, with the final version not expected until 2012 at the earliest, but the rear-wheel drive model has started taking shape and playing catch-up with its Toyota equivalent.

While Toyota is already on the second incarnation of its FT-86 concept, which is also appearing at the Geneva show, this is the first we have seen of Subaru's attempts.

Unlike the Toyota, which closely previews the production version of the car which is due next year and could wear the Celica badge, the Subaru focuses on the technology underpinning the car.

The horizontally-opposed 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine and rear-driven wheels are on display, as are the Macpherson type struts at the front of the car and double wishbone suspension at the rear.

The Subaru is on the same time plan as the Toyota FT-86 with which it shares much of its architecture, so we can expect a final production version of the car later in the year ahead of going on sale in 2012.
