Geneva motor show: Aston Martin Virage

Aston Martin has taken the covers off the new Virage at Geneva - the 490bhp car intended to slot between the DB9 and DBS in the manufacturer's range.

If you believe that the glass is half-full, this is another beautiful Aston Martin. If you believe the glass is half-empty, it is another Aston Martin that looks like all the others.

The car is designed to be more user-friendly than the DBS, and the company is promising the most refined iteration of its Vantage/DB9 platform yet.

The Virage will come in both coupe and convertible formats, and will contain the same 6.0-litre V12 engine that features in the Vantage, DB9, DBS and the Rapide, but the 490bhp output is unique to the new model.

The styling has also been subtly developed with new wings and front end to give a more elegant look. The usual attention to detail has been lavished on the interior, with seven high-quality leather hides used for the seats and the facia, while a total of 70 man hours will be spent on creating the inside of each Virage.

Effectively the new car is an improved DB9, but at an extra cost of around £25,000, bringing the price to £150,000. It will be interesting to see if people with that much money want to save £25,000 by choosing the slower, less refined DB9 over the Virage.
