It seems travellers' love affair with Spain will never end. Yet again, the country has come out as the top destination.

Eurostat figures from the European Union released yesterday show that the Iberian country is still the most popular place to stay in Europe.

Last year saw international travellers – both business and leisure – spend 268 million nights in Spanish hotels, which is up 6.4 per cent on 2009. Close behind was Italy, where visitors spent 245 million nights in hotels.

Germany was the third most popular, France fourth and the UK came in at fifth place. Of the EU's 27 nations, these five destinations accounted for 70 per cent of the total nights spent in hotels.

Estonia, Denmark and the Netherlands all saw significant rises in popularity.
