Ford hints at new Kuga with Detroit concept

Ford has taken the covers off a new concept in Detroit that previews the look of the next-generation Kuga.

The car, dubbed the Vertrek, is an indication of the direction Ford will take as it moves the compact SUV one step closer to becoming a global model.
The concept shares its platform with the new Focus and C-Max, and is equipped with the manufacturer's latest 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine.

"Customer demands are converging globally toward a compact sport utility vehicle that is stylish and great fun to drive while at the same time providing the package, capability, engaging technology and fuel economy they expect," said Jim Farley, group vice president of global marketing.

Ford claims the Vertrek combines its European kinetic design styling with the luggage capacity, trailer-tow and off-road capability that American's require from an SUV.

The manufacturer is keen to exploit the burgeoning international market for compact SUVs with another global car based on the platform it expects to underpin two million vehicles by 2012.

The production model that results from the Vertrek will keep the Kuga name in Europe and be called Escape in the US.
