The police could be handed a new weapon in the roadside war on drugs next year as a handheld device is unveiled which can detect substance abuse in just 90 seconds.

The coalition government has already committed itself to the introduction of a so-called 'drugalsyer' which would provide police officers with the means to test suspected drug drivers in the same way they currently do for motorists thought to be over the alcohol limit.
