BMW reveals new 6-series convertible

Feast your eyes on the new 6-Series convertible.

Longer, lower and wider than its predecessor, the upmarket model gets an all-new look and a unique "fin" soft-top roof.

Revealed by BMW ahead of the car's public debut at the Detroit show next January, the convertible will hit UK showrooms a full a six month before the coupe version.

The manufacturer insists the 6-Series' styling embodies its design DNA better than any other model. Its appearance is clearly derived from the GranCoupe concept seen earlier in the year.

The sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase and high, flat waistline certainly look to give the convertible the physical presence that the last 6-Series enjoyed.

To help emphasis the model's svelte lines, the new multi-layered cloth roof gets two 'fins' which extend along the car's flanks past the rear window.

Expect the 6-Series to have become a little more luxurious inside, but the real difference should be how much roomier the cabin feels. The convertible is 74mm longer and 34mm wider than the outgoing car, which should translate into a bit more leg and shoulder room.

Underneath BMW is promising the usual mix of GT cruising competence and sports car ability thanks to its Drive Dynamic Control system which allows the driver to opt for different settings for the gearbox, steering and throttle.

We'll have to wait and see how successful they've been with that, but there's no doubting the performance capabilities of the petrol engines offered at launch.

The 650i gets a 407bhp twin turbo 4.4-litre V8 which should see the big soft-top to 62mph in 5.0 seconds. The 640i uses a 320bhp turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six which isn't much slower at 5.7 seconds – and is also capable of 35mpg with CO2 emissions of 185g/km.

If that's not rich enough for your blood a replacement for the M6 convertible is also thought to be planned. Expect BMW's diesel engines to make their way into the range later in the year.

The 6-Series convertible goes on sale in the UK in March.
