Morgan to make three-wheeler next year
Morgan has confirmed it will launch a tricycle-like car that harks back to the very early days of motoring.
The Morgan Super Sports will be powered by a 1.8-litre Harley Davidson motorbike engine and send its 100bhp to the single rear wheel via a five-speed Mazda gearbox.
The aim is to combine 'get in and drive' simplicity and the looks and driving thrills of the likes of the original Morgan Three Wheelers that the company produced between 1909 and 1953.
The modern version of the car will be built from a tubular steel frame, which will be covered by a series of aluminium panels. Inside there is a padded leather cockpit that allows the feeling of "flying through the air."
Despite the low levels of power, the Super Sports is expected to make it to 60mph in around 4.5 seconds and on to 115mph thanks to its featherweight proportions – around 500kg.
To start with, all the cars will be 'standard', but Morgan will build bespoke models once the original run finishes. No prices have been confirmed yet, but it is expected to cost around £25,000 when it goes on sale.
