Saab widens 9-5 range, reduces 9-3 emissions

Saab has added two new engines to its recently launched executive 9-5 range, and revised the diesel engines in the smaller 9-3, one version of which now achieves CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

The 9-5 is now available with a 190bhp diesel (labelled 2.0TTiD) that's optionally available with four-wheel drive, and a downsized 1.6 petrol turbo of 180bhp, the same engine as in Vauxhall's Astra and Insignia.
The 2.0TTiD's 295lb ft of torque allows it to break 62mph in less than nine seconds, while its 159g/km of CO2 emissions keep it below the 160g/km threshold that's critical for company car users.

The engine's twin sequential turbochargers deliver strong pulling power across the rev range, claims Saab, producing combined fuel consumption of 47.1mpg.

The 2.0TTiD is available with the Vector SE and Aero trim levels, while the optional XWD system, which sends torque between and across the axles for maximum traction, come with Saab's H-arm rear suspension for improved refinement.

The downsized 1.6 turbo petrol accelerates to 62moh in 9.5secs, returns 36.2mpg combined and puts out 179g/km of CO2. Also new to the 9-5 are radar governed cruise control, which maintains a preset distance from the car in front and the 9-5's colour palette extends from seven colours to 11.

The smaller 9-3 range also gets updates for 2011. The 119g/km 9-3 saloon comes with a 130bhp 1.9 litre turbodiesel and fuel consumption-reducing features that include revised engine management calibration, longer gear ratios, an intelligent alternator, reduced weight, aerodynamics improved by a rear undertray, low-rolling resistance tyres and for the automatic, a revised torque convertor with optimised gear-shift points.

The result (for the manual) is combined fuel consumption of 62.8mpg. The engine's output rises by 10bhp to 130bhp, but acceleration and top speed are unaffected by the longer gearing, says Saab. Emissions for the heavier Sportwagon and Convertible are 122g/km and 137g/km respectively.

The old 150bhp diesel now puts out 160bhp, and there's also a new 180bhp diesel, both these version benefitting from some of the other fuel-saving measures mentioned above, as do 9-3 petrol models. All three diesel versions are now twin turbo.

Standard equipment on the 9-3 now includes heated front seats, Bluetooth connectivity, improved child-seat fixings and a gearshift light to aid economy, and there are two new colour options.
