Mk III VR6 becomes the fastest Golf ever

Updated

A GTI enthusiast in America has clocked a scarcely believable 208mph in his 1997 Golf VR6 at the infamous Texas Mile race event.

What makes the time even more impressive is the fact that the car featured the same V6 petrol engine and five-speed manual gearbox it left the factory with – albeit with some significant modifications. A new turbocharger helps boost the original engine's power output to around 800bhp.

A limited slip differential has been added for the sake of traction, but rather than fiddle with the Golf's gear ratios, its owner relied on bigger wheels to adjust the length of the final drive, enabling the car to hit its targeted top speed. Hats off, sir.
