Father's Day is held on the third Sunday of June every year in the UK. This year the 20th of June is the date when we pay our respects to fathers and father figures across the country. Many sons and daughters will make the effort to send their fathers a card or gifts on this special day.

President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day. It was President Richard Nixon who signed the law, which finally made the date permanent 1972.

Father's Day in the UK is celebrated in a similar way to how it is celebrated in the US. The Father's Day festival is marked on the third Sunday of June, the same as the date in US. People will mark the day by sending cards and gifts to appreciate their fathers and express their affections for them. When it comes to buying gifts you could try treating your dad with anything from flowers, chocolates, cuff links, a case of beers or maybe even a novelty gift like flying lessons.

It's possible that the idea of Father's Day may have originated in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. The summer solstice falls at around the same time of year as Father's Day.

Another reason we celebrate this day is because in the US a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd became interested in the American Mother's Day celebrations and decided to plan a day to honour fathers. Father's Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA.

In the UK Father's Day has never been made into a bank holiday. As far as of public life is concerned it is a normal Sunday. Public transport systems will run to their normal timetables. Restaurants will be busy though, as people take their dads out for a meal to celebrate.
