Back in 2005 the meeting left the famous old course and headed north to York Racecourse whilst the old course underwent major improvements. The new track and grandstand opened in time for the 2006 Royal Ascot meeting and its modern facilities make it one of the world's finest racing venues.
This year the Royal Ascot meeting will be held from the 15th to the 19th of June at its home in Berkshire. The high class thoroughbred races will feature some of Europe's most valuable three and four year-old racehorses over five days of fun and fashion. It's estimated that there will be 320 000 spectators present who will witness thirty top class races.
The history of Royal Ascot started, unsurprisingly, with the Monarchy back in 1711, when horse racing was becoming very fashionable with the rich and famous. Queen Ann purchased the land next to Windsor Castle thinking that it would prove very suitable for horse racing which, of course, it certainly proved to be.
These days Royal Ascot has become the most prestigious horseracing meeting in the country with Royalty gracing the terraces on a daily basis. There are plenty of stunning races to enjoy, in particular the Blue Riband event, the famous Ascot Gold Cup, which is raced on Ladies Day.
