Video: Driver leaps from flaming Lotus Exige at Nurburgring 24hr race

Updated

It hardly seems like a 24hr race can be staged in Europe now without a score of eager journalists entered in the field for the sake of a 4-page magazine feature, but we can't wait for Roger Green's take on his hasty exit from a flaming Lotus Exige last weekend.

Green, competing on behalf of Evo magazine, was taking part in this year's 24 Hours of Nurburgring race when his car caught fire during his second session behind the wheel. With the Lotus filling with smoke (and more worryingly, actual flames) Green was forced to leap from the stricken car before he could ditch it into the barrier.

By the looks of the footage it certainly seems like his ungainly exit was the right move – the Exige was engulfed by fire moments after the journalist landed on the grass. Apparently the word in the pit lane was that the blaze had erupted after Exige's rear brake lines were severed by debris on the track. No doubt Green will enlighten us in the next copy of Evo.
