Porsche 918 hybrid attracts 900 potential buyers

Porsche's 918 hybrid, the stunning concept the brand sprung upon us at the Geneva motor show, has reportedly attracted 900 serious potential buyers and could end up being made as a result of the interest.

According to Bloomberg, Porsche's development chief, Wolfgang Duerheimer said at the Beijing motor show that the company would probably make the car should it get 1,000 firm statements of interest.

"I'm confident that we will soon reach the threshold of 1,000," he said. "We need 1,000 seriously interested people to make a sound business case."

The concept is similar to the hybrid 911 GT3 RS, in that it is not aiming to be a low-power eco model, but instead it pairs a massive 500bhp petrol engine with two electric motors. However, this huge engine does not mean it will be thirsty – the concept is said to emit just 70g/km CO2, and be able to drive for up to 15.5 miles on electric power alone.

That all sounds rather fun, so here's hoping another hundred people with a spare couple of hundred thousand pounds kicking around decide they want one.
