Slower F1 drivers could create hazards on track

Updated

The new batch of F1 teams joining the grid this season could create problems for the top drivers, who will have to negotiate slower-moving cars around the track.

Three new teams – Lotus F1, Virgin Racing and Hispania Racing (HRT F1) – are feared to be so far off the pace of the rest of the grid that they could cause potentially dangerous roadblocks on the straights where cars like Mclaren and Ferrari can reach speeds of around 188mph.

Christian Horner of Red Bull Racing told the Times, "You might start a lap eight seconds behind somebody and think you are OK. But you will catch these guys before the end of the lap - and then, will they be looking in their mirrors? So the potential for them to cause an incident is reasonably high. Teams are going to have to work hard to get track position so their drivers don't run up to the back of Hispania and Virgin and Lotus at the end of a flying lap."
