Hyundai plans cut-price Scirocco rival

Hyundai is planning a £15,000 coupe that it hopes to pitch as a budget alternative to Volkswagen's Scirocco.

Based on the i30 platform, it will take its inspiration from the Veloster concept that Hyundai displayed at the 2007 Seoul motor show.

The new coupe could make it to the UK at the start of next year according to Hyundai managing director Tony Whitehorn, and is intended to be more of a driver's car than the old Hyundai Coupe."The old car looked great but wasn't much of a performance vehicle," said Whitehorn. He explained that the new coupe will be much more of a "hot hatch".

"It will be launched with a 1.6-litre petrol engine, and we are looking to see if we can put a turbo into it," he added.

The coupe is expected to have a 2+2 seating arrangement, and will have a third door on one side like the Mini Clubman. Whitehorn says the door can be moved so it sits on the passenger side for UK owners, unlike the Mini's, which is only available on the right of the car.
