Mitsubishi to make a hybrid Evolution

Updated

In a major contradiction in terms, Mitsubishi could be preparing to make its first 'green' performance car.

Reports suggest the next Lancer Evolution could feature a plug-in hybrid engine that will use an electric motor in place of the turbocharger. The 2.0-litre petrol engine will therefore be naturally aspirated, relying only on lithium-ion batteries for its extra performance.

The eleventh generation of the performance Lancer, the Evo XI, is believed to be based on the PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid that was shown off at the 2009 Tokyo motor show. As with the current generation of the Evo, it is expected the car will be four-wheel drive, with the electric motor driving the front wheels and the petrol engine powering the rear.
