Nelson Piquet Jr will be racing in NASCAR in the 2010 season after giving up hope of landing a Formula One seat.

The Brazilian, who was involved in a crash scandal that was exposed after he left the Renault F1 team in 2009, has made the announcement on his personal website.

"I have decided to focus on something different and have chosen to take a route in America," he said on npiquet.com. "NASCAR is hugely challenging and nobody has ever come in as an outsider before and gone on to win it – it will be the ultimate challenge."

Piquet has not specified which branch of NASCAR he will be racing in, saying: "I will let you know more details on the exact programme soon."

Piquet has not ruled out returning to Europe in the future though: "I have a lot of ambitions in my life, one of which has always been to win the Le Mans 24 Hours."
