Live from Detroit: GM bosses to close Saab

Updated

It's being reported that General Motors is poised to shut down Saab, despite production restarting at the company's Swedish factory today.

"We're closing down Saab. We're winding it down," GM executive Ed Whitacre told Autocar.

There have been offers to buy the ailing Swedish manufacturer as a going concern, including bids from Dutch sports car maker Spyker and a consortium led by Bernie Ecclestone, which is rumoured to have offered £88 million for the company.

But there's fresh doubt here at the Detroit motor show that GM wants to sell Saab at all, because it would lose control over the technology and resources it's put into the company. A wind-down now looks the most likely option.
