Ouch! Journo wrecks historic motor

Here's a lesson for the motor manufacturers - be wary who you lend your cars to.

Hannu Mikkola drove a Ford Escort MkI 16,000 miles to win the 1970 London-Mexico World Cup Rally in 1970. Sure, it got some dents and bruises along the way but it still reached its destination and the Finn was reacquainted with the car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend to give it a run out up the hillclimb.

But give it to a journalist from a national UK magazine and anything can happen, as Ford discovered on the final day of the Festival. At just over a mile long, the Goodwood hillclimb has a few twists although nothing too demanding but get too near one of the hay bales that line the route and things can turn tricky pretty quickly. Last year, an Aston Martin suffered a similar fate, would this mishap be equally as costly?

"We won't know until we get the bonnet open - we can't at the moment - but I don't imagine we'll see much change out of seven or eight grand' said a Ford representative ruefully. Oh well, it could have been worse.
