All to play for at Le Mans

Updated

After the six hour practice session on Wednesday, there is little to choose from the leading contenders for this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Audi's Allan McNish canme out on top, setting the fastest time of 3min 30.708secs around the 8.47-mile track, but he admitted the time was not wholly representative of the car's potential because of the rain that blighted much of the session.

But overall the Scot was pleased with the evening's work, saying "It was the first time our new R15 TDI had run a lap at Le Mans and we've learned a lot tonight, collecting valuable data from all three cars."

While many teams used practice to qualify their drivers (each has to drive at least three laps at night), Peugeot ran a six-hour 'race' with their #7 908 HDi FAP car putting in 79 laps (1076km).

McNish finished the session with the fastest time but Audi and Peugeot both swapped the lead throughout practice, while Pescarolo and Aston Martin also led the overall field. It sets up a fascinating battle for qualifying later today (1700-2200 BST)
