NASA Sends Rubber Chicken Into Space

Description:In early March, the most powerful solar storms since 2003 battered satellites and caused breathtaking displays of the northern lights. One group of schoolchildren from Bishop, California, responded by sending a rubber chicken in a lunchbox into space. This was no ordinary bird though - Camilla is the mascot of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, and she was equipped with radiation sensing badges. On two occasions, once before and once during the storms, the bird was strapped to a weather balloon and carried up to 120,000ft - around 40km, above the Earth's surface. Once the balloon climbed above 99 per cent of the atmosphere, it popped and Camilla parachuted back down so the students could analyze the data.
