Take a subterranean boat trip through the turquoise waters of the Melissani Lake Cavern, marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites in the Drogarati Cave, and simply spend lazy days together on the white sands of Myrtos beach and secluded Platia Ammos. For intimate, lamplit dinners for two, head to Fiskardo marina for delicious local cuisine accompanied by the gentle sound of waves lapping on the shore.

Zante for 24-hour thrill seekers

Zante's nightlife is a Greek legend. Party central is Laganas on the island's south coast which offers up the island's best clubs featuring big name DJs and 100 lively bars along the strip and beach. The fun kicks off with beach and boat parties around 2pm and doesn't stop till after sunrise. If you're a hardcore thrill seeker there are plenty of adrenaline-fuelled activities to choose from: quad biking, diving, caving, canyoning and terrifying base or rope jumping from the huge vertical limestone cliffs at Navagio beach. Coming home from a holiday in Zante is bound to be an anti-climax.

Crete for foodies

Greek food is delicious whichever island you're on – crispy salads, net-fresh fish, mouth-watering grills, garlicky dips and salty olives... Crete takes Greek gastronomy to a whole new level. Delicious local cheeses, made from sheep's or goat's milk, appear at almost every meal, in crisp pastries and in desserts drizzled with orange blossom honey. Dakos, a crunchy rusk, is served under salad toppings for a quick snack or light lunch. A true Cretan speciality is snails, cooked with red wine and olive oil, but if you don't fancy those, there's slow-cooked pork or charcoal-grilled sardines too. And the wine is definitely worth sampling – Crete is one of the biggest producers of Greek wine.

Rhodes for history buffs

If you think Crete, with its Minoan Palace of Knossos, is spectacularly historic, just wait till you see Rhodes. Rhodes is packed with culture at every turn. There's no dusty ruins in the UNESCO-listed walled old town – people live and work in this maze of medieval streets, ancient fortifications and buttresses, making it as buzzing now as it was in the 1300s. On the hill above the city the Acropolis of Rhodes and the Temple of Apollo dominate the view, with an ancient stadium, a theatre, and tombs to explore. And once you've exhausted uncovering the history around Rhodes old town, travel 50km south to Lindos, where you can start all over again with another ancient acropolis, temple and towers.

Halkidiki for nature lovers

You might not think you could stumble across wolves, jackals and wild boar on your Greek holiday, but if you visit Halkidiki you just might. Part of mainland Greece, these three beautiful peninsulas jutting out into the Aegean boast mountain ranges, wetlands, conservation areas, forests and 550km of stunning coastline dotted with tiny islands, inlets and deserted coves. There's a cavern system with the accessible Petralona Cave to visit, waterfalls, thermal springs and mountain trails to explore by bike or on foot. Mount Itamos is the place to spot wolves while wild boar, roebucks and birds prefer the woodlands of Mount Stratoniko.

Kos for beach lovers
