A young woman jumped to her death from a hotel rooftop bar in Manhattan after her credit card was declined.

The 33-year-old ate a meal and had two drinks at the Bookmarks Lounge on the 14th floor at the Library Hotel on Madison Avenue before jumping at around midnight.

According to the NY Daily News, her credit card was declined. She then wrote the names of relatives to contact after her death before using a chair to climb on to a ledge.

Bar staff called police and tried to coax her down, but just as they arrived she jumped 140ft to her death.

In a statement, spokesman from the Library Hotel told the Daily Mail: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident that took place at our hotel last night.

"Our guests safety and well-being is our number one priority, and our team is fully cooperating with the local officials."
