Last year, the National Geographic Society began a new foray in world-class travel experiences with the launch National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, a collection of boutique hotels in extraordinary places around the world with a demonstrated commitment to sustainability, authenticity and excellence.

Selected through a rigorous evaluation process, these lodges offer "an outstanding guest experience while supporting the protection of cultural and natural heritage and embracing sustainable tourism practices".

As part of a comprehensive vetting process, every lodge in the collection is judged on design and character quality of service and sustainable tourism best practices.

Not only are these properties incredible places to rest your head while on holiday but they offer activities and opportunities galore for adventurous travellers and keen explorers.

Take in the Northern Lights in Canada, see how many wild animals you can spot in Zambia or explore Tibetan culture in China.

Lynn Cutter, National Geographic's executive vice president for Travel, said: "We built National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World to serve as a shining example of sustainable tourism around the world."

The stunning properties were chosen thanks to their outstanding guest service and the wealth of experiences on offer to those staying there.
