Twelve people have died after being stuck in a three-day traffic jam in Indonesia at an intersection known as 'Brexit'.

The huge tailback occurred as millions of people headed home after the Eid al-Fitr festival that marks the end of Ramadan.

The traffic stretched for more than 13 miles before the toll gate at the intersection known as Brexit, short for Brebes exit.

Hemi Pramuraharjo, a transport ministry spokesman, said that Indonesia's roads become blocked every year at the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims, but that the chaos at 'Brexit' was higher than usual.

According to the Guardian, he said" "In terms of this 'Brexit' case, there's been a total of 12 victims over different days."

He added that several of the victims were elderly, some died of fatigue and other health complications, while one local media report emerged saying that a one-year-old had been killed by exhaust fumes.

According to the BBC, daytime temperatures in the city of Brebes have been around 30C all week.

The site said that Hemi added: "There's no space on the road. We don't have a solution."
