Throughout July, AOL Travel is running a series of lovely original features in celebration of Britain's beautiful off-the-beaten track places.

As a nation, we're fonder than ever of so-called staycations - which isn't really surprising: after all, Britain is home to some of the world's most incredible scenery, culture and architecture, and it also represents value for money.

But a holiday at home doesn't have to mean visiting crowded seaside towns or wondering around attractions with thousands of others. Britain has some beautiful off-the-beaten track places to discover, and we'll be exploring them in our series of inspiring articles, with fascinating facts, useful information and beautiful image galleries.

Every day during July, we'll be showcasing the parts of Britain that tourism hasn't (yet) ruined. Explore the UK's most beautiful abandoned places, find the best secret beaches and where to spot wildlife, top secret spots to go wild swimming, remote off-the-beaten track accommodation in the UK and the secret spots in London that aren't overcrowded with people taking selfies (yes, believe it or not it is possible)... and lots more besides. Enjoy.
