Man smashes window of BMW to save dog from hot car

A Canadian man was filmed smashing a rock through a car window after discovering a dog trapped inside as temperatures reached 30C in Great Bend, Ontario over the weekend.

The rescue was captured on camera by Will Costa who filmed the crowd gathering around the BMW as the man used a rock to smash two of the car's windows on Saturday.

Speaking to the Sarnia Observer, Costa said the car's parking ticket had expired 90 minutes earlier.

"Police were called, there were announcements over the PA system asking the BMW owners to come to their car, and a reasonable amount of time had passed when he started smashing the window," Costa said.

Once the glass was shattered, the crowd cheered and the small white dog was removed from the car.

"He's sweating," the man who was seen throwing the rock said in the video as he held the wet dog. "It's probably 45 degrees Celsius in the car."

Costa said that the owners finally turned up 50 minutes after the dog was saved.

"At first, they were confused," he told Global News. "At the time they felt they did nothing wrong — they left the window open and claimed that would be more than enough for the dog to be able to breathe and be comfortable."

The dog was returned to the owners but the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating.

Police said it is not likely that the man who smashed the car windows will face charges.
